The new Cooper River (Arthur Ravenel Jr.) Bridge is a best-case study for when things go right between public interests and public agencies. T.Y. Lin International, in a joint venture, provided design review, construction engineering and field inspection services for the new high-level, cable-stayed bridge across the Cooper River. The new Cooper River Bridge links the town of Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston and provides a new landmark for the city of Charleston. Opened to traffic in July 2005, one year ahead of schedule, the bridge is now the longest cable-stayed span in North America. Committed to supporting the local economy, the joint venture established an office in Charleston and a comprehensive community outreach program to provide residents input on the project. All necessary materials, including boats and computer systems, were purchased from vendors in Charleston and neighboring Mount Pleasant.
